Cemetery Guide

Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

Monument design in New Jersey must account for each cemetery's specific regulations before the design is finalized. Height limits, setback distances, approved materials, and restrictions on imagery vary by facility and by section within a single cemetery. Monument Design Shop confirms these regulations directly with the cemetery before the design drawing is produced, so the family reviews a compliant design from the start. No revisions after fabrication.

Foundation Requirements

Foundation design is part of monument design in New Jersey. The frost line sits at 36 to 42 inches below grade, and foundations must reach that depth to prevent heaving. Monument Design Shop's installation crew prepares foundations to match each cemetery's specifications — poured concrete footings, granite base installations, or prepared beds as required. The monument is set level and checked before the crew leaves the site.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Religious cemetery guidelines shape monument design in specific ways. Catholic cemeteries in the Morris and Essex County area typically require a cross or religious figure. Jewish cemeteries in Bergen and Passaic counties often welcome Hebrew alongside English while restricting portraiture. Orthodox sections may require flat monuments only. Monument Design Shop builds denomination-specific design requirements into every project from the consultation forward.

Our Monuments (General) Collection

Monument Design

Monument Design Shop's monument design shop produces the complete line: upright monuments in die-base-cap construction, slant monuments for height-restricted sections, flat monuments for park-style sections, bench monuments, and mausoleum components. Companion monuments present two names as a unified composition. Family monuments carry larger dies with blank panels for future inscriptions. Veteran monuments integrate military imagery hand-carved to branch specification. Every design starts with a consultation and ends with a scaled drawing for family approval — nothing enters fabrication without written sign-off. The drawings are precise: they show the die dimensions, base proportions, inscription layout, typeface, and any sculptural elements. What you approve is what we carve, and what we carve is what stands at the cemetery.

Granite Options

Four granite colors are available across all monument forms at Monument Design Shop's design shop. Barre Gray is the contemporary minimal choice — a cool Vermont silver that lets inscriptions carry the visual weight. India Red adds warmth, effective on companion and family monuments. Mahogany provides depth and presence. Black Galaxy offers the strongest contrast for hand-carved lettering, with gold mineral flecks visible in sunlight. All four are displayed in Monument Design Shop's Morris County showroom so families can assess them together before committing to a design direction.

Custom Design Process

Monument Design Shop's design process is straightforward and family-led. The consultation identifies the monument form, granite color, inscription content, and any sculptural or portrait elements. A scaled design drawing is produced and reviewed with the family; their written approval initiates fabrication. Our Morris County workshop handles hand-carving, polishing, and assembly. Our installation crew handles foundation preparation and cemetery placement. The family receives notification when the monument is set and the site is ready.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Monument Design Shop's monument design process moves in six clear steps. One: design consultation — we meet with the family, confirm cemetery regulations, and establish the design direction. Two: scaled drawing — a precise illustration showing proportions, inscriptions, and sculptural elements is produced for written family approval. Three: material selection — the granite slab is inspected at our Morris County, NJ workshop for density and color uniformity. Four: hand-carving — artisans incise inscriptions and relief work using chisels and pneumatic tools, finishing each element individually. Five: finishing and assembly — polishing to mirror finish, sandblasting carved areas to matte contrast, assembly and inspection. Six: installation — our crew prepares the cemetery foundation, sets the monument level, and notifies the family. English, Russian, and Polish are spoken throughout the process.

What Families Say

New Jersey families have entrusted us with their memorials for three generations.

“The design drawing was exact. Every detail we discussed was there, and when we approved it, we trusted that the finished monument would look the same. It did. Monument Design Shop's process is clear, their craftsmanship is evident, and working with them was less stressful than we expected.” — Daniel, Essex County NJ

Every design is confirmed against the cemetery's current regulations before fabrication. Height limits, setback requirements, foundation specifications, and faith-specific design rules are all confirmed with the cemetery office before the design drawing is produced.
